The project

The Gilding Project is the evolution of a MA dissertation completed by Sara Hetyonk Duron at the Courtauld Institute under the supervision of Dr. Scott Nethersole in 2022. The project is necessitated by the difficult nature of viewing gold in art. The project’s goal is to collect high quality images of gilding to be made available for scholarly use. As gilding is best viewed in person, this project seeks to remove the access barriers presented by travel or private collecting that can limit research. Scholars are encouraged not to rely entirely on images available online, including images that are part of The Gilding Project. There is no substitute for viewing works in person despite this project’s best efforts.
